CREATE MOOD WITH COLOUR

Just like your decorating style, the colours you use in your home convey a mood or an emotion. Whether you’re looking to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, a calm and peaceful environment, or a sophisticated and elegant look, colour is your secret weapon.

Warm colours like reds, pinks, yellows, and oranges can bring energy and liveliness to a space, but also lend themselves to a cozy vibe. Cool colours like blues and greens, can create a tranquil and peaceful vibe. Neutral colours like beiges and greys can add a touch of sophistication and timeless elegance.

The thing with colours though, is that it isn’t a black and white (haha) formula, you can have warmer greens, or cooler pinks, depending on the undertones. A green may have yellow undertones, a blue may have green undertones, a yellow may have red undertones, a grey could have purple undertones, etc etc. These undertones are what make the colour appear different in different lighting, and when adjacent to other colours.

Depending on the “temperature” of your room, colours with the wrong undertone could significantly impact the overall mood of a room.

As an aside, the easiest way to determine a colour’s undertone is to compare it to a sample that you know to be a true colour. For example, if you are trying to find the undertone for a red, then compare it next to a true red. This will give you an idea of whether your red has a more yellow or violet undertone.

One of my favourite ways to figure out what colours to decorate with, is by using a colour palette. A colour palette is a collection of colours that complement each other and work together to create a cohesive look. When choosing a palette, consider the major elements in the room, such as the flooring and furniture, and then choose colours that complement them. From this colour palette, I’ll draw colours for paint, throws, cushions, art, accessories…..

Actually, for my house , I have kept my paint colours fairly neutral, as I like to change out my colours every season. All warm colours, but changed throughout the year.

So, there you have it! Let’s paint the town red… or blue… or green… you get the point. Get ready to add some colour to your life!
