Spring break is just around the corner; and that means vacation time!! Getting away is a great way to relax and unwind, but it does come with its own stressors: the biggest one I hear is how to secure your home when you’re away.
It’s a sad reality that thieves often target homes when the owners are away on vacation. However, there are several steps you can take to keep your home secure while you’re away. Here are a few tips:
- Don’t Advertise Your Absence: Avoid posting about your vacation on social media until after you return. It’s hard to do, but the most important tip.
- Install a Home Security System: Installing a home security system is an effective way to deter burglars. Choose a system that includes motion sensors, door and window sensors, and cameras. Don’t forget to post signs indicating that your property is under surveillance.
- Secure Doors and Windows: Make sure all doors and windows are locked before you leave. Close some blinds / curtains, but leave one or two (visible from the street) open to give the illusion of someone being home.
- Notify Trusted Individuals: Let a trusted neighbour, friend, or family member know that you will be away and ask them to pop by to check on your home. Give them your contact information in case of emergency.
- Light Up and Add Sound to Your Home: Keeping your home well-lit is another effective deterrent. Use timers to turn on lights at night and to turn on a radio or a television at a low volume for short bursts of time to create the illusion that someone is home. This can be particularly helpful in rooms that are visible from the street.
- Use Smart Home Technology: Smart home technology, such as smart locks and video doorbells, can provide additional security and peace of mind. You can monitor your home from your phone and receive alerts if there is any suspicious activity.
- Hire a House Sitter: If you have pets or plants that require regular care, consider hiring a house sitter. Not only will they take care of your home, but their presence will also deter potential burglars.
- Keep Valuables Out of Sight: Keep valuable items, such as jewellery and electronics, out of sight. Consider locking them in a safe or storing them in a secure location outside of your home.
- Secure Your Garage: Your garage can be an easy entry point for burglars. Make sure the garage door is locked, and consider installing a deadbolt on the door leading from the garage to your home.
- Check Your Home Insurance: Make sure your home insurance policy is up to date and provides adequate coverage for theft and property damage.
And finally, don’t forget to enjoy your vacation! By taking the necessary steps to secure your home, you can relax and have a worry-free getaway. Have a great time and return to your safe and secure home!
